This research analyzes the disproportionate distribution of African American students in special education in a New Jersey high school, the structural inequality reflected in the causes and consequences of such a demographic distribution, and the inherent limitations of the special education curriculum as implemented in the school under study. These three dimensions expose societal, school system, and leadership issues. This study includes the author's personal experience in special education as it speaks to the interrelationship of African American students and the impact of special education on academic motivation, self-esteem, and students' future educational and career opportunities. Demographic analysis of students of special education enrollment trends over several years was conducted to establish a pattern of increasing disproportionate African American enrollment. Narrative interviews were conducted with special education teachers and parents to determine how these demographic patterns were perceived to impact the quality of student personal and academic experience in special education.
