In 1994 the Society for American Archaeology, the largest organisation of archaeologists in the world, commissioned a census to see what was going on in archaeology as a discipline. This book presents the results, drawing on other reports and surveys for comparative material. The report notes that an increasingly significant proportion of women work in archaeology and also the increasing role of the private sector in employing archaeologists (and, apparently, giving them more job satisfaction than academia).
