Two investigators joined forces to test an intervention to improve services for patients with co-occurring mental disorders. The researchersAi applied theoretical understanding a the counselorsAi intimacy with patient responses combined to strengthen the intervention. However, counselorsAi discomfort with some protocols a changes reflecting the dynamic nature of the community-based research setting complicated the study execution a interpretation. The intervention improved the counselorsAi ability to identify a respond appropriately to patientsAi co-occurring disorders. The experience also demonstrated the advisability of consulting collaboratively with clinic staff during the planning of studies a the pre-testing of study protocols.
