The purpose of the present study was to develop and investigate the validity of a universal screening system, the Preschool Behavior Screening System (PBSS; Feeney-Kettler a Kratochwill, 2008), for the early identification of preschool students at risk for emotional and behavior disorders. Teachers (N = 112) and parents ( N = 109) of students (N = 113), ages three through five who were enrolled in preschool/daycare programs in California and Tennessee, completed Phase One (Internalizing and Externalizing Nomination Rubrics) and Phase Two of the PBSS ( Internalizing Symptom, Externalizing Symptom, and Prosocial Behavior Scales), in addition to the preschool version of the Behavior Assessment Scale for Children, Second Edition ( BASC-2, Reynolds a Kamphaus, 2004). Inter-rater reliability between parent and teacher ratings on Phase One and Phase Two was moderate, except for the parent internalizing domain. Internal consistency for Phase Two was high. The Phase One nomination rubrics and Phase Two scales were correlated in the expected directions, while sensitivity and negative predictive power were high across respondents and constructs. Exploratory factor analyses for Phase Two supported a three-factor model, although the percentage of variance explained was low across respondents. The PBSS Phase Two scales were correlated in the expected directions with their corresponding composites on the BASC-2, demonstrating good concurrent validity with the BASC-2. The results were interpreted to indicate that the PBSS may be a psychometrically sound and cost-effective screening system in helping states meet child-find requirements mandated by IDEA legislation, so that children at risk for emotional and be behavioral disorders can be identified for appropriate prevention and intervention services.Table 27 Items Generated to Include Important Content from theASEBA, BASC-2, ESP, and CRS- R for Phase Two of the ...
